Company Profile

Tradition of SRA in Japan

Business and Software Culture

SRA, Software Research Associates, was established in November, 1967 in Tokyo with around ten associates. It is one of the oldest independent software houses in Japan. As of March 1, 2005, SRA Inc. was listed on the first section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

According to the biography of Ryugo Marumori, who is one of co-founders of SRA, the challenge of the young company was started with words "Let's do something interesting" between Kouichi Kishida and him. Ryugo Marumori brought up SRA and SRA Group with strong business leadership and also has made great contribution to the growth of the Japanese software industry.

Kouichi Kishida, co-founder of SRA, was one of the earliest theorists of software engineering. He already built and published his own structured programming theory in 1969. Naturally, SRA keeps its commitment to object-oriented programming later. It reflected its research of Smalltalk and business of Java solution. By his strong advice, Ryugo Marumori decided to install VAX11/780 in SRA in 1980. In Japan it was the first UNIX machine installed for business use and the fourth overall including universities and laboratories. The cost of the installation was almost the same as the company's net profit for that year. In 1981, UNIX/C education for new employee was started, and in 1983, SRA started building LAN within the company. Also, COBOL and FORTRAN software development toolkits were created on UNIX. Until 1980, SRA expanded its direct business with accounts of brokerage, banking, chemical, electric, iron manufacture, and electric power.

In 1987, Kouichi Kishida met Richard Stallman , the founder of the GNU Project. SRA joined FSF, Free Software Foundation, as the first founding member from Japan providing technical support for the GNU Project. SRA created Open Source Business Division two years later, growing into a business with GNU/Linux and PostgresSQL in 2001. There are lots of free software created by SRA members. Specially, "Jun for Smalltalk" by Atsushi Aoki has been accessed and downloaded hundreds thousand times in the world. SRA Key Technology Laboratory, Inc is providing solutions based on its own research of software engineering.

SRA prioritizes international conception and global approach. The company name "Software Research Associates" itself was quite unique in Japan in 1967. SRA has actively joined software conferences oversea, affiliated with software companies in USA, UK, France, Korea, China, and India. In the United States, the first branch office was set up in Maryland in 1982, and SRA America, Inc. was established in New York in 1984.

SRA America

Our main roles have been consulting and development of clients own system. SRA America is providing those services with quality and low cost. Our consultants, from high level planner/designer to developer, have performed successfully in the projects with our devoted service. Today's clients request not only quality of service but also low cost. They needs to strictly check ROI in their system. We have been trying hard to reduce cost within our side to make it possible to provide quality of service at a reasonable price.

The need for low cost has lead us to a more global approach. We have constructed global networks within the SRA Group to prepare for this approach. SRA America established SRA India Private Limited in Bangalore, India 2002, which enabled us to provide Global Support Services and Offshore Development. Trained DBA technicians and almost a hundred Java programmers in SRA India are ready for these missions.

SRA has been the top contributor of PostgreSQL propagation and the main technical adviser of PostgresSQL for enterprise use in Japan. In 2001, SRA brought in Bruce Momjian who has been one of the core members of open source database PostgresSQL community. In 2003, PowerGres, PostgresSQL in Windows platform, was developed by SRA and released to the USA market via SRA America. SRA America is pleased to offer a new range of enterprise services for the PostgreSQL RDBMS.
